Biography:

Dr. Vahid Garousi is an Associate Professor (called: Senior Lecturer in the UK academia) of Software Engineering in the Queen’s University Belfast, UK. His areas of research expertise are: software engineering, software testing, empirical studies, action-research, and industry-academia collaborations. 

A strong aspect of his profile is his diverse and international work experience, covering four countries. Before joining QUB, he worked as an Associate Professor of Software Engineering in Wageningen University, the Netherlands (2017-2019), in Hacettepe University, Turkey (2015-2017), and University of Calgary, in Canada (between 2006-2014).

Dr. Garousi has published more than 160 papers, so far in his career. According to the Google Scholar, his h-index is 37 (as of July 2021). 

A 2021 bibliometric study published in the Journal of Systems and Software, ranked Dr. Garousi as the 2nd most-active "consolidated" (mid-career) software engineering researcher world-wide, among more than 4,000+ active researchers in software engineering who regularly publish in top-quality journals. 

Another earlier bibliometric study published in 2018 in the Journal of Systems and Software, had ranked Dr. Garousi as the 8th most-active "consolidated" software engineering researcher world-wide, among all researchers in software engineering. 

In parallel to his academic career, he is also a practicing software engineering consultant and coach, and actively provides consultancy and corporate training services in the areas of software testing and quality assurance, model-driven development, and software maintenance. Many of those consultancy activities has led, in the past, to several innovative and exciting collaborative industry-academia research projects.

During his career so far, Dr. Garousi has served as the principal investigator (PI) for several research grants and has been active in initiating a number of major R&D software engineering projects with software companies in several countries including Canada and Turkey. Since the beginning of his academic career in 2006, he has been involved as an organizing or program committee member in many international conferences, such as EASE, ICST, ICSP, CSEE&T, MoDELS and the Turkish National Software Engineering Conference (UYMS). 

Dr. Garousi is a member of the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society, and is also a licensed professional engineer (PEng) in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Alberta. Among his awards is the prestigious "Alberta Ingenuity New Faculty Award" (now called: Alberta Innovates) in June 2007. He was also selected a Distinguished Visitor (speaker) for the IEEE Computer Society’s Distinguished Visitors Program (DVP) for the period of 2012-2015.

Dr. Garousi received his PhD in Software Engineering in Carleton University, Canada, in year 2006; MSc in Computer Engineering., from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, in year 2003; and his BSc in Software Engineering, from  Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2000. 

Personal: Dr. Garousi has several cultural backgrounds, which is due to his international life and work experience. He has dual Canadian-Iranian citizenships, while he considers himself a "world citizen". Being a native Azerbaijani, he has lived in and has happily adapted Turkish (also Turkic), Iranian and Canadian cultures. Living and working in different countries has given him a great exposure to different cultures. He is fluent in four languages: Azerbaijani (mother tongue), English, Turkish, Farsi and has a basic command of French and Arabic.
